INTRODUCTION By Allan Mackintosh
Welcome to
The Coaching Manager. Are you a manager? Are you looking to become a manager?
Do you coach managers? Or, are you looking to move from management into
coaching? If you answered yes to even one of those questions, this e-book is
for you. My aim is to bring coaching to the role of managers. It is a wonderful
skill that can transform the lives of the coached and the coach.
The
manager who coaches effectively empowers people to dramatically improve their
performance at work. This benefits everyone: the organization, the manager, the
team, and the person being coached. After twenty years experience as a
specialized coach within the industry, I am currently working in my own
management coaching business. It brings me great pleasure to share with you the
knowledge and experience that came as a result of twenty years of managing and
being managed.
I was very fortunate to have my own coach for a year, but
I did not always feel that way. My initial reaction to being coached was
hesitancy about being in that position. Now, I can honestly say the support I
had through having my own coach was indeed, life changing. It can be for you,
too.
Management is a really tough game. I call it a game because some
managers "play" at it, and some who do take it seriously always want to win.
Still others are determined to do their best for their people, their
organization, and themselves. Those managers, whose aim is for the latter, are
the ones who will succeed. I can help you become a better manager, by helping
you develop in one area of management: coaching. There are many other facets to
management, but the skill of dealing with people whether it is an employee, the
"boss", or a customer is by far the toughest skill to develop, but it also
brings the greatest rewards.
Many industries are investigating ways to
help their managers coach more effectively. This is partly due to the success
sports coaches have on motivational and development growth of their athletes.
It is recognized that top business people have skills similar to their skills
that could be used to achieve similar results with employees in
businesses.
This e-book will give you ideas, some "do's" and "don'ts",
and real life examples that demonstrate the best ways to coach in a management
environment. It will not, however, enable you to become an effective coach just
by reading it. To truly master the skill of the "great coach" and become a
coaching manager, it will be necessary for you to be able to convert theory
into practice, and continue to practice your skills, as well as continually ask
for feedback from people you work with. Having your own coach will help you
develop your own coaching skills even more quickly.
Enjoy!
