Electronic Medicines Compendium (eMC) - pharmaceutical
compendium / Medication Information
The electronic Medicines Compendium (eMC)
provides electronic Summaries of Product Characteristics (SPCs) and Patient
Information Leaflets (PILs). It provides information on thousands of licensed
medicines available in the UK. The eMC is continuously updated with new and
revised SPC and PIL information which, after approval by the licensing
authorities, is submitted directly by pharmaceutical companies.

Electronic Medicines Compendium (eMC) - pharmaceutical
compendium / Medication Information
The eMC provides free and up-to-date
information on UK medicines both prescription medicines and those that
can be bought 'over-the-counter' in a Pharmacy. The eMC provides electronic
Data Sheets, Summaries of Product Characteristics (SPCs) and Patient
Information Leaflets (PILs). Data Sheets and SPCs are technical documents on a
medicine, which help guide healthcare professionals on the best way to use a
medicine. Explanations of some of the terms used in SPCs can be found in the
glossary in the Help section. PILs are intended for the patient and this
leaflet is included in the medicine packaging.
The eMC provides
information on thousands of licensed medicines in the UK. Every year there are
many changes to SPCs and PILs and so once the new information has been approved
by the Governments licensing authority, the site is updated continuously.
Pharmaceutical companies submit the information directly to the site and are
responsible for keeping their SPCs and PILs up to date.
Before the eMC
was developed, SPC and PIL information was only available in book form -
The ABPI Compendium of Data Sheets and Summaries of Product
Characteristics and the 'Patient Information Leaflet Compendium'. The
books were useful references and the Medicines Compendium is still printed
every year. But with thousands of entries it is bulky and quickly goes out of
date. The eMC was launched in 1999 and provides a dynamic way to find
information on medicines. It is updated continuously so users have information
which is as up to date as possible a significant improvement over the
Compendium.
The eMC is provided by Datapharm Communications Ltd.
Established in 1977, this is a "not for profit" company set up by the
Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI). The aim of Datapharm
Communications Ltd is to ensure that people have access to essential
information on medicines. Datapharm liaises closely with a broad range of users
and providers of systems and medicines information. The Data Sheet, SPC and PIL
information on the site is provided directly from the pharmaceutical company
that makes the medicine.
