Amedeo - Medical literature search
AMEDEO serves the needs of healthcare
professionals, including physicians, nurses, pharmacists, administrators, other
members of the health professions, and patients and their friends. AMEDEO gives
easy and timely access to relevant information within their respective
fields.
Updating a medical textbook annually, especially the
bibliography of the various chapters, requires considerable effort. To speed up
the process, Kamps developed software for targeted literature searches that
returned results in a format easily imported into the AIDS textbook. In
November 1997, he decided to publish his weekly search result on his web site
and established a mailing list for interested colleagues. At this time, Kamps'
brother, Stephan, decided to join the effort, offering his computer and
software experience. In January 1998, Stephen Kamps realized a breakthrough
when he developed software that allowed the literature service to be adapted to
the specific needs of single subscribers. As a result, in May, the original HIV
service was extended to include in excess of 30 subjects. The new web service
became known as Amedeo, trivially named after Via Principe Amedeo, the street
in Cagliari where Bernd Sebastian Kamps lived at the time (see a view over the
city port from the family apartment).
Since then, Amedeo has provided
its subscribers with weekly updates on new articles for a given subject. The
results are published in a personalized journal subset (example). In this
manner, Amedeo rapidly developed into one of the most popular web services for
medical scientists. In November 1999, the number of subscribers reached 10,000,
and in September 2003, the 100,000th subscriber signed on! The success of
Amedeo may partially be due to the fact that it was developed by doctors ...
for doctors. In addition, all Amedeo services are free of charge! Until
September 2003, Kamps chose not to publicize the number of Amedeo subscribers -
a deliberate move not to wake up potential "me-too" competitors.
