Abbott Laboratories suspended from ABPI
Date published: 13/02/2006
Abbott Laboratories has been suspended from
the Association of the British Pharmaceutical
Industry (ABPI) for breaches of the code of practice. The initial
suspension of six months stems from complaints about inappropriate hospitality
for health professionals.
ABPI president Vincent Lawton said: "The
pharmaceutical industry strives to maintain the highest possible ethical
standards in all its dealing with healthcare professionals. The breaches that
have been identified are viewed in a very serious light, and this is reflected
in the suspension ? a sanction that we have not needed to apply for many years.
"However, it is reassuring to note that Abbott also recognises the
seriousness of the breaches, and has taken action to prevent their
recurrence."
Abbott has stated that it was aware of the problem before
the complaint arose and had undertaken an investigation and a review of
procedures. It added that the employees involved had left the company. The
complaint made in 2005, referring to actions in 2004, concerned hospitality
trips, including one to greyhound racing in Manchester, where no records of who
attended or what the meetings were about were kept.
