Schering brings back Bonefos

Schering has reacquired the rights to the bisphosphonate Bonefos (sodium clodronate) in the UK and Ireland. Pharma Times reports that the company bought back the rights to the drug that was licensed to Boehringer Ingelheim.

The licensing agreement was made in the 1980s but Schering's decision was made as the agreement was coming to an end. Ronny Greif, Schering marketing manager, said: "We are delighted to have all Bonefos formulations in our portfolio. We have long-term plans for the product and are committed to its support in the future."

Bonefos is used in the treatment of osteolytic lesions, hypercalcaemia and bone pain that arises from multiple myeloma and breast cancer, by preventing the removal of calcium from bone cells. The financial terms of the agreement between Boehringer Ingelheim and Schering were not released.
