GlaxoSmithKline weight loss drug could be sold over the

GlaxoSmithKline's weight loss drug Xenical (orlistat) could
soon be available without prescription in the US. The US Food and Drink
Administration (FDA) is to decide today whether the drug in a low dose form
should be available, meaning it would be the first ever non-prescription weight
loss drug approved in the US.
Sales of the drug have been lower than
expected due to some side effects, but the company claims that lower doses of
Xenical reduce the level of side effects. Xenical, which GlaxoSmithKline has
the licence to market in the US from Roche, works by preventing fat being
absorbed into the body.
The company is also suggesting it be taken with
vitamins to ensure there is no chance of vitamin deficiencies occurring while
it is being taken. There are also concerns that Xenical may block the intake of
other drugs, especially those used in treating diabetes.
