Molecular
biology sales jobs Molecular biology is the study of biology at
a molecular level. The field overlaps with other areas of biology and
chemistry, particularly genetics and biochemistry. Molecular biology chiefly
concerns itself with understanding the interactions between the various systems
of a cell, including the interrelationship of DNA, RNA and protein synthesis
and learning how these interactions are regulated. Microbiology
sales jobs Microbiology is the study of microorganisms, which
are unicellular or cell-cluster microscopic organisms. This includes eukaryotes
(with a nucleus) such as fungi and protists, and prokaryotes (without a
nucleus) such as bacteria and viruses (though viruses are not strictly classed
as living organisms). Although much is now known in the field of
microbiology, advances are being made regularly. The most common estimates
suggest that we have studied only about 1% of all of the microbes in any given
environment. Thus, despite the fact that over three hundred years have passed
since the discovery of microbes, the field of microbiology is clearly in its
infancy relative to other biological disciplines such as zoology, botany or
even entomology. Biochemistry
sales jobs Biochemistry is the study of the chemical processes
and chemical transformations in living organisms. This article only discusses
terrestrial biochemistry (carbon- and water-based), as all the life forms we
know are on Earth. Since life forms alive today are believed to have descended
from the same common ancestor, they naturally have similar biochemistries, even
for matters which would appear to be essentially arbitrary, such as the genetic
code or handedness of various biomolecules. It is unknown whether alternate
biochemistries are possible or practical. Biochemistry is the study of
the structure and function of cellular components, such as proteins,
carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids, and other biomolecules. Chemical biology
aims to answer many questions arising from biochemistry by using tools
developed within synthetic chemistry. Although there are a vast number
of different biomolecules, they tend to be composed of the same repeating
subunits (called monomers), in different orders. Each class of biomolecules has
a different set of subunits. Recently, biochemistry has focused more
specifically on the chemistry of enzyme-catalyzed reactions, and on the
properties of proteins. Genetics
sales jobs Genetics (from the Greek genno ?e???= give birth) is
the science of genes, heredity, and the variation of organisms. The word
"genetics" was first suggested to describe the study of inheritance and the
science of variation by the prominent British scientist William Bateson in a
personal letter to Adam Sedgwick, dated April 18, 1905. Bateson first used the
term "genetics" publicly at the Third International Conference on Genetics
(London, England) in 1906.
Heredity and variations form the basis of genetics. Humans applied
knowledge of genetics in prehistory with the domestication and breeding of
plants and animals. In modern research, genetics provides important tools for
the investigation of the function of a particular gene, e.g., analysis of
genetic interactions. Within organisms, genetic information generally is
carried in chromosomes, where it is represented in the chemical structure of
particular DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) molecules. Genes encode the
information necessary for synthesizing the amino-acid sequences in proteins,
which in turn play a large role in determining the final phenotype, or physical
appearance, of the organism. In diploid organisms, a dominant allele on one
chromosome will mask the expression of a recessive gene on the other.
The phrase to code for is often used to mean a gene contains the
instructions about how to build a particular protein, as in the gene codes for
the protein. The "one gene, one protein" concept is now known to be simplistic.
For example, a single gene may produce multiple products, depending on how its
transcription is regulated. Genes code for the nucleotide sequences in mRNA,
tRNA and rRNA, required for protein synthesis. Genetics determines much
(but not all) of the appearance of organisms, including humans, and possibly
how they act. Environmental differences and random factors also play a part.
Monozygotic ("identical") twins, a clone resulting from the early splitting of
an embryo, have the same DNA, but different personalities and fingerprints.
Genetically-identical plants grown in colder climates incorporate shorter and
less-saturated fatty acids to avoid stiffness. Immunology
sales jobs Immunology is a broad branch of biomedical science
that covers the study of all aspects of the immune system in all organisms. It
deals with, among other things, the physiological functioning of the immune
system in states of both health and disease; malfunctions of the immune system
in immunological disorders (autoimmune diseases, hypersensitivities, immune
deficiency, allograft rejection); the physical, chemical and physiological
characteristics of the components of the immune system in vitro, in situ, and
in vivo. Immunology has various applications in several disciplines of science,
and as such is further divided. Informatics
sales jobs Informatics includes the science of information and
the practice of information processing.Informatics studies the structure,
behavior, and interactions of natural and artificial systems that store,
process and communicate information. It also develops its own conceptual and
theoretical foundations. Since computers, individuals and organizations all
process information, informatics has computational, cognitive and social
aspects. Used as a compound, in conjunction with the name of a
discipline, as in medical informatics, bioinformatics, etc., it denotes the
specialization of informatics to the management and processing of data,
information and knowledge in the named discipline.
Pathology sales jobs
Pathology (from Greek pathos, feeling, pain, suffering; and logos, study
of; see also -ology) is the study of the processes underlying disease and other
forms of illness, harmful abnormality, or dysfunction. Within biology but also
a branch of medicine, it means specifically the study and diagnosis of the
structural and functional changes in cells, tissues and organs that underlie
disease. Pathology as a field of knowledge hence forms the basis of the
scientific reasoning behind the practice of medicine.
